FRIDAY 20TH AUGUST - TRAINING DAY
Dad was working again so I travelled the 2hr 30 min journey from home to Pila with Joel... the SatNav says 2.5 hours but it always takes longer as there is a massive queue to go through the Mont Blanc tunnel!
We arrived in Pila round about 1, this gave us time to walk the track then get some training done. I've never ridden in Pila before - only watched the World cup there when i was tiny. When we got there, I recognized the last jump, which the last time I was here looked massive! It was still big but no where near as big as I remembered!!
Training started at 2pm. I headed up the lift at about 3, then trained till 6. It's a really good track, it's fast. There's a few technical sections - but not enough as thats what I love!! Although a few tricky bits that aren't bad. Training for me went really well, I was feeling good, and I didn't have any crashes, I was really liking the track. I didn't feel very fast, but it was only Friday and i still had Saturday morning to build up my speed.
It was a cloudy day and it was spitting down, but that was a good thing, because if not the track was really dusty. The weather didn't get better during the day, but it wasn't bothering anyone, just a bit foggy.
SATURDAY 21ST AUGUST - QUALIFYING
Wow. I actually slept really well! It was quite cold in the morning, but i survived :p. I had set my alarm at 7:30 am, knowing that i wouldn't get up till 8. I then got up and washed my hair in the public toilets - I like being clean! Anyway Joel and I had breakfast and headed up the hill at about 9. The sun was out, i could feel that it was going to be a good day! The track was a bit damp but it was drying out with the sun. I followed Joel and changed a few of my lines, some of his were faster. I crashed on a new line i tried, which only a few were doing. I preferred to stick with my line - it felt faster. Mum, dad, Chevy and Becky his girlfriend came to watch my qualifying.
I got ready for my qualifying run, I was relaxed, having a good time with all the family. I didn't wait a lot at the top, so that was good. I was 2nd to last Under 17 Junior girl to go.
I wasn't concentrating that much and crashed just 10 seconds down my run, doing a rock jump and getting a pole stuck in my rear wheel. I got it out and carried on, doing fairly well. This track was very bumpy at the bottom, so gave massive arm pump! I caught up 2 girls in my race run, and took the qualifying by 30 seconds. I was also third in Elite women, just 4 seconds back - my crash would explain those seconds lost. I was happy with my time and run, but i knew i could do better.
Joel then had a problem with his forks and could not fix them or find any spares (I am so glad i have my Marzocchi's), so after my qualifying, he went home with the others, just leaving Dad and I!
Later on that day Julien (Camellini - who qualified 2nd), Dad and I went for a drink. I went inside to get and ice cream, came back out and Nico Vouilloz was sitting at our table. At first i didn't know who it was, then dad introduced him to me - OMG!!! - he was a great person to talk to, he definitely knows what he's on about when it comes to bikes and racing which we talked a lot about - that was cool.
SUNDAY 22ND AUGUST - RACE DAY
Training that morning went well, i picked a few faster lines with Dad walking the track with me. After a few runs though i had a little mechanical and a couple of crashes, so i decided to stop and relax before my race run.
Dad fixed my bike and we had lunch, then my race run was at 13.32.
I went up the lift kinda knowing i had my age group in the bag - sad really as I love competition so much. I knew that i just needed to stay on to win. In my race run i didn't push myself to my limits. I had a clean run and quite a few mistakes. I came down 1st so i got to sit in the hot seat for a while, waiting for the other girls to come down. I won the Junior Girls but I just missed out on the Womens overall by 1 second - so 2nd Elite women- gutted really as i wanted to go below 5 minutes and I really could have gone loads faster.
Camellini took then win in the Elite, congrats!
Boy was it hot in Pila! It's a great place to ride, lots of tracks, and nearly always good weather. Well it was when i was there anyway! I had a good weekend, I really enjoyed it.
